Advintageous Project Evaluation.

For my project, I decided to look into the 1930s. I chose this because I love everything about this time, especially the fashion, and one of my favourite books, To Kill a Mockingbird, was se tin this time. It explores the segregation and the Dust Bowl, which were two important events of the 1930s. I also like the 1940s, however I chose the 30s over this because I wanted to look at something different, and the 1930s has slightly similar patterns and designs to the 40s, so I could still include some of my favourite patterns.

For research, I began by creating a mind map and Pinterest board exploring some themes including fashion, transport, film and music.  I found it easy to use Pinterest, and gave me a lot of information to help put into my mind map. I produced two sheets on two different themes as I was unsure of what theme to use for my final designs, so using two themes would give me more choice. I researched Transport and Fashion, two completely different themes; I really enjoyed the fashion of the 30s, especially the high fashion, with the faux fur and silk, ad sleek rollers. I wanted to explore transport also, as transport is an important aspect of daily life, and I wanted to explore the contrast between transport then and in the present day. The main cultural influence of the 1930s was most definitely the black and white segregation. It really made a mess of the society, and was completely unfair.

When creating my bunting designs, I tried to keep them all similar, using similar colour schemes, and as I chose fashion for my theme, I incorporated fashion into each flag. I copied each design onto the Calico, using a variety of methods;
For two of my flags I used the magic touch and heat press method, copying my designs straight onto the material. This is a method I had not used before, and after using it a few times I got the hang of it. I learned to be aware of the panels as they are incredibly hot and to be patient when waiting for the ink to transfer. For the third and fourth flags, I sewed pieces of ribbon and felt onto one piece of calico to create an Art Deco pattern, I also added some paint. For the fourth I painted over the Calico and sewed on my design from my design sheet, which I photocopied and cut out. I added some sequins to add some more colour an sparkle, as 1930s high fashion was incredibly glamorous.

I managed to get all of my work in on time, although I feel I could have managed my time much better, having to speed up towards the end of the project. It hasn't made a difference knowing it is for a live client, as I still work and plan towards my hand in date the same as I would normally.

Overall, I am satisfied with my result, I think I used a varied amount of techniques, which came together quite nicely, and I also learned some new techniques along the way. I would't change anything, apart from next time I know to make my time management much better and take care in what I am doing. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with my overall result.
