For my project, I decided to look into the 1930s. I chose this because I love everything about this time, especially the fashion, and one of my favourite books, To Kill a Mockingbird, was se tin this time. It explores the segregation and the Dust Bowl, which were two important events of the 1930s. I also like the 1940s, however I chose the 30s over this because I wanted to look at something different, and the 1930s has slightly similar patterns and designs to the 40s, so I could still include some of my favourite patterns.
For research, I began by creating a mind map and Pinterest board exploring some themes including fashion, transport, film and music. I found it easy to use Pinterest, and gave me a lot of information to help put into my mind map. I produced two sheets on two different themes as I was unsure of what theme to use for my final designs, so using two themes would give me more choice. I researched Transport and Fashion, two completely different themes; I really enjoyed the fashion of the 30s, especially the high fashion, with the faux fur and silk, ad sleek rollers. I wanted to explore transport also, as transport is an important aspect of daily life, and I wanted to explore the contrast between transport then and in the present day. The main cultural influence of the 1930s was most definitely the black and white segregation. It really made a mess of the society, and was completely unfair.
When creating my bunting designs, I tried to keep them all similar, using similar colour schemes, and as I chose fashion for my theme, I incorporated fashion into each flag. I copied each design onto the Calico, using a variety of methods;
For two of my flags I used the magic touch and heat press method, copying my designs straight onto the material. This is a method I had not used before, and after using it a few times I got the hang of it. I learned to be aware of the panels as they are incredibly hot and to be patient when waiting for the ink to transfer. For the third and fourth flags, I sewed pieces of ribbon and felt onto one piece of calico to create an Art Deco pattern, I also added some paint. For the fourth I painted over the Calico and sewed on my design from my design sheet, which I photocopied and cut out. I added some sequins to add some more colour an sparkle, as 1930s high fashion was incredibly glamorous.
I managed to get all of my work in on time, although I feel I could have managed my time much better, having to speed up towards the end of the project. It hasn't made a difference knowing it is for a live client, as I still work and plan towards my hand in date the same as I would normally.
Overall, I am satisfied with my result, I think I used a varied amount of techniques, which came together quite nicely, and I also learned some new techniques along the way. I would't change anything, apart from next time I know to make my time management much better and take care in what I am doing. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with my overall result.

Advintagoeus Project, Mindmap.
To start off our project, we began be choosing an era. I chose the 1930s, because I really like everything to do with the 30s, and one of my favourite books, To Kill A Mockingbird was set in this era. I like the fashion from this era also, and there were some interesting events, such as the dustbowl, and the segregation. I briefly studied all areas of the 1930s, including fashion, transport, music and film and advertisement. I decided to use watercolour in all of my studies because it is only a brief overlook of the era, so I didn't want to include too many things and my sheet appear crowded.
I also made a 1930s Pinterest board, Pinterest being something I have used before, so I found it easy to navigate around the site. Using Pinterest helped me to find more accurate information about the 1930s rather than on Google, as it had original prints of articles and posters.
Overall I am pleased with the era I chose, and think there is plenty of topics to research for my final bunting.

FMP Year 1 project- My Self.
For our end of year project, we were asked to design and create a project based on ourselves. To begin this project I started by Collecting a range of primary sources, to give me some base to work on. I created a mind map briefly mentioning all the topics that make up my life and my interests; the people that are in my life and the hobbies I possess. I used watercolour to create all my studies because I wanted it to be brief and quick. I also write down a list of possible themes to base my project on, such as music, my childhood, my hobbies and family just to give me some ideas.
After creating my mind map I went onto my sketchbook sheets. I created a page on me personally, and added some primary photographs from me as a child, now and some photographs of the hobbies I am involved in. I think to improve I definitely could have included some secondary evidence just to mix it up a little. My studies could have been better quality but as I produced them from a screen they were not as detailed as they could have been if I used a photograph.
Next I looked into my family. I used a range of mixed media such a collage and paint, observational drawing and ink transfer. I transferred an image of me and my family to give it a worn effect, as it was an old photograph. I wanted my page to be snapshot of the past, as if a briefcase of my childhood had leaked out onto the page. My sister is very important to me, and I produced two studies of her, one from now and one from her as a child, to show how she has aged over time. I also included some tickets from past holidays I have shared with her, to show the things we have experienced whilst we have grown up. (Due to my project being cut up for portfolio I do not have the original sheet for my overall theme.)
I decided to choose childhood as my theme for this project, so I had created an A3 design sheet presenting my theme. I included photographs from my and my childhood friends, and created some small studies of me and my family. I used a primary image from one of my first holidays at seaside. I used acrylic to paint this as I was working small. If I had used pastel or watercolour it may have smudged and blended so I figured acrylic paint would work the best. I used small strokes and kept my colours minimal in the background to really bring out the figures in the foreground showing they are important to me.
I then created a range of sketchbook sheets going over the theme of childhood. I included secondary sourced images of some of the programs and music I loved as a child. I used tissue paper to form a feather boa shape, as a distinct memory from my childhood was dressing up with my friends in fancy dress. I wanted to add some texture to my sheets also. I definitely feel to improve I could have included my primary and secondary sources to show evidence rather than just copying them onto my sheets. I also made a montage of all the favourite people in my life. I created a background of different mediums, watercolour, inks and tissue paper, and made four studies of the four women that influence my life greatly, and have helped me become the person I am today from my childhood.
