Ceramics workshop; button and pendant making with clay

When working with clay, one of the most important things to remember is to Wash your hands after use, as it is not pleasant to consume. When using the clay we rolled it out first using rolling pins, and had measuring sticks to measure the width of the clay once rolled. We used various textures rolling pins and rollers to create texture on our buttons and pendants, making them more interesting. Anothe rissue with clay, is that after time of working, the clay begins to dry and crack, to make sure to keep a cup of water and brush nearby! To make the pendant I first used a circular cutter, with a smaller cutter inside to make the hole. I used the end of a paintbrush to make the dents around the outside, and a knife to cut into it. For the lion, I made a circular base, and began to roll small pieces of clay to form the mane, and used a crosshatching technique to stick everything together. The cross hatching technique simply involves crosshatching the base and the exterior, then spreading with water and sticking together; the grooves from the crosshatching make the pieces stick together much better.

After finishing our work, they were left to be heated in the kiln, ready to paint and gloss in a few weeks time (pictures will be put up soon.)
